The Recording Academy hosted its fourth Grammy Salute to Music Legends television special in July at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre to honor its 2019 Special Merit Awards recipients. This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award honorees included Sam & Dave, Black Sabbath, George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, Billy Eckstine, Donny Hathaway, Julio Iglesias, and Dionne Warwick, while Lou Adler, Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson, and Johnny Mandel were recognized as Trustees Award honorees.
A number of musical stars from all genres took part in the night’s festivities, including Garth Brooks, Johnny Mathis, Jessie Mueller, Julio Iglesias, Rival Sons, Gregory Porter and more.
Garth honored R&B duo Sam & Dave by teaming with the duo’s Sam Moore to perform a medley of “Hold On, I’m Comin’” and “Soul Man.”
In addition, Jessie Mueller, who stars in the upcoming Lifetime film, Patsy & Loretta, honored Lou Adler by performing “I Feel the Earth Move” and “It’s Too Late.”
The Grammy Salute to Music Legends television special premieres nationwide on Oct. 18 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings).
